This Saturday the gallery celebrates the work of three very different artists; the late Ken Robinson, recent graduate Gryffin Cook, and Canterbury-based artist Michael Springer.
Ken Robinson was a much loved and very experienced lecturer at AUT, where he taught and inspired generations of young artists for almost 40 years. He studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London in the 1960s, where the tutors at the time included Anthony Caro, Phillip King and Elizabeth Frink. Since then, his work has been exhibited widely throughout New Zealand.
Ken passed away in January 2021, and I’ve been working with his son Cyprian de Castro-Robinson, and Eve de Castro-Robinson, to restore some large artworks which I think are of great significance to the history of art in New Zealand. We’re showing these with some of his unique prints.
Gryffin Cook represents the other end of the artistic spectrum; as a new graduate of Elam. His recent degree show was one of the most refreshing shows I’d seen in ages, and his love of technology and the blockchain, AI and crypto makes for compelling viewing and intriguing conceptual journeys. There’s nothing like this out there at the moment, so pop in and experience it for yourself!
And finally I’m pleased to show four new magical surrealist works on hessian by Canterbury based artist Michael Springer who we are pleased to welcome back for a small show.
All welcome. See from Saturday!
